Mount Rushmore was officially completed on October 31, 1941.

On October 31, 1941, the carving work on Mount Rushmore was officially completed after 14 years of construction.

Located in South Dakota's Black Hills, Mount Rushmore features the 60-foot faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the monument and led the project for most of its construction. After his death in March 1941, his son, Lincoln Borglum, oversaw the final work.

More than 400 workers helped carve the massive granite mountain. Dynamite removed much of the rock, while workers used drills and other tools for the finer details.

Today, Mount Rushmore remains one of America's most recognized landmarks — and a memorable place to celebrate the people and events that helped shape the nation.
