Short Tutorial/FAQ – How Often Should I Replace My Phone?

Download Graphics to View Question: I don't need all the latest bells and whistles. How can I tell whether or not it's time to get a new smartphone?

Answer: How often to replace a phone largely depends on your individual budget and how much wear and tear you place on it.

Most phones should last for at least two or three years. Ones that are well cared for can last five years and still maintain most of the original functionality, but the processing speed and battery capacity could be degraded. After five years, a phone should be upgraded because essential components will likely begin failing if they haven't already.

Here are some telltale signs that your phone is failing:
  • Dwindling battery life
  • Cracked screen or physical damage
  • Unresponsive or delayed touchscreen
  • Out of storage space
  • Applications crash or restart frequently
  • Phone frequently overheats
  • Cords disconnect from ports and jacks
If you notice these signs, it's time to start shopping for a new phone.
