Vinnie Joyce of Nitta Yuma, Mississippi sent the raccoon to the White House, intending for it to be slaughtered and served for that year's Thanksgiving dinner. President Calvin Coolidge, however, didn't want to eat the woodland critter. He became smitten by the raccoon and instead granted it a pardon. The raccoon, who the First Family named Rebecca, became a beloved pet at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. She joined an already lively menagerie — which included a black bear, wallaby, and pygmy hippo as well as dogs and canaries. Rebecca's adventures were routinely reported in newspapers, and she gained quite a bit of fame, even making a star appearance at the 1927 Easter Egg Roll at the White House.
