You Chose "D" Mammoth – That's Incorrect!

The original name of Amazon was Cadabra.

You may remember that Amazon started out as an online bookstore. But less commonly known is that the company's original name was Cadabra — inspired by abracadabra, a magical spell. Jeff Bezos incorporated the company on July 5, 1994, as Cadabra, Inc., but after a few months, he changed the name to Amazon.com, Inc.

Why was the change made? Because a lawyer thought Cadabra was too similar to the word "cadaver," which could prove problematic. Bezos then selected the name Amazon since the Amazon River is the biggest river in the world, and he planned to make Amazon the biggest bookstore in the world. Plus, since it started with the letter "A," the name would be near the top of an alphabetized list.
