Mister Rogers said, "I'm feeding the fish" because of a letter he received from a young blind girl.

In the letter, the blind girl wrote that she was worried the fish on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood were hungry. In response to her concern, Mr. Rogers would narrate himself feeding the fish to reassure her.

The fish in Mr. Rogers' tank often included angel fish, swordtails, tetras, and mollies. The fish tank became a permanent part of the television house set in season one, episode #87, which first aired June 18, 1968. In Episode #1101, Mr. Rogers buried one of his dead fish. This was the only time he ever buried a pet on television.

Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired from 1968–2001.
