The animations for the 1964 version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer were filmed in Japan.

This iconic Christmas TV special premiered in the United States on December 6, 1964. It was made with state-of-the-art technology, and the animations were filmed in Japan. Parts of the puppets could move independently thanks to articulated metal armatures inside, and this technology was combined with the stop-motion technique to produce the final product.

The entire soundtrack for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was recorded in a studio in Toronto, Ontario, and most of the singing and speaking cast were Canadian.

In the special, Sam the Snowman (voice of Burl Ives) narrates the story of Rudolph. His parents, the Donners, try to hide his glowing nose but during the Reindeer Games, his fake nose falls off. Rudolph is ridiculed and kicked out of the games. Meanwhile, an elf named Hermey would rather be a dentist than make toys. Hermey runs away and meets Rudolph, and they join up with prospector Yukon Cornelius. The trio escape the Abominable Snow Monster and discover the Island of Misfit Toys.
