Carol Burnett sent a message to her grandmother with her trademark tugging of the ear.

The Carol Burnett Show aired from 1967 to 1978 and featured skits by Carol Burnett and her comedy troupe. As a way to send a message to her grandmother, Burnett began the tradition of tugging at her ear during each episode. She continued the trademark gesture after her grandmother died, as a tribute to her.

While The Carol Burnett Show was voted #16 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, it was never a ratings juggernaut. It failed to ever make it into the top 10 in the Nielsen ratings and peaked at 13 during the 1969-1970 season.

Another interesting piece of trivia is that each week's show was taped twice in front of different audiences, and the best parts from each taping were edited together. In the first performance, the actors stuck closely to the scripts. But in the second, they improvised and ad-libbed, which often produced the funnier versions.
