Jeannie was required to cover her naval on I Dream of Jeannie.

I Dream of Jeannie premiered in 1965 and was the story of a United States astronaut who finds his life vastly complicated when he stumbles upon a bottle containing a female genie.

Barbara Eden played Jeannie, and Larry Hagman played Major Anthony Nelson. According to Eden, network executives and censors were unconcerned about her navel being seen until someone mentioned during the third season that it was occasionally visible when the waistband of her costume shifted. After that, her navel was required to be covered.

Although a big deal was made of this naval requirement, there were other rules the show had to follow. For example, the chiffon bottom of Eden's costume had to have an extra layer added so her legs couldn't be seen through it.

Some I Dream of Jeannie fans might not know that a year before the show began, Eden costarred in the comedy movie The Brass Bottle, where Tony Randall unleashes a genie (Burl Ives) from a mysterious bottle. This movie was the working model for I Dream of Jeannie.
