Mr. Ed's voice was that of Allan Lane, a former cowboy film star.

Airing from 1961-1966, the TV show Mr. Ed featured the misadventures of a wisecracking talking horse, Mr. Ed, and his human owner, Wilbur Post (played by Alan Young). Mister Ed won't talk to anyone other than Wilbur, and goes out of his barn to cause mischief, for which Wilbur gets blamed.

Mr. Ed's voice was a closely guarded secret that caused speculation at the time. It was eventually revealed that Allan Lane, a cowboy film star, spoke for the horse. A Golden Palomino, Mr. Ed wouldn't respond to any of his co-stars, just his trainer, Lester Hilton. This meant that Hilton had to be on the set at all times, calling out commands or giving them with hand signals. Mr. Ed's daily diet was twenty pounds of hay, washed down with a gallon of sweet tea.
