Idea #1 (October)

October Is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month spotlights cybersecurity as a shared responsibility that affects all Americans. It's a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and its public and private partners, including the National Cyber Security Alliance. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity to help individuals stay safe and secure online.

As threats to technology and confidential data become more common, it's important to take steps to reduce your chances of being affected. Turn on Multifactor Authentication, update your software, think before you click, and use strong passwords.

Get a Taste of Trivia During Apple Month

Since October is National Apple Month, perhaps it's time to host a Gala, play some Jazz, and invite Granny Smith, Jonathan, and Pink Lady to join the fun.

According to the U.S. Apple Association, the average American consumes roughly 19 pounds of apples per year. Here's some other trivia about this popular fruit: Washington State produces 70 percent of the apples in our country. The only native apple to North America is the crabapple, first cited in Boston in 1625. It takes around 36 apples to produce one gallon of cider.

These were the top 10 TV shows by Neilson ratings for the 1974-1975 programming year, which began in September 1974:

All in the Family
Sanford and Son
Chico and the Man
The Jeffersons
Mash

They all aired on one of the "Big Three" networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC. Remember when you had to get up to turn the dial on your TV in order to change the channel?

You Need a Playbook for Watching Football

It can be challenging to figure out where to watch a football game these days. Games may be available on traditional TV networks, streaming services, or a combination of both. For instance, NFL games may be spread across services including ESPN+, Prime Video, Peacock, and NFL Network, while college games might be split between Big Ten Network, ESPN, CBS Sports, and others. This fragmentation means you may need to pay for several streaming subscriptions, and juggle between platforms, to see every game.

To tackle football game challenges, start with an online serch. Enter “where to watch team vs team football game” and review reputable sources regarding where a particular game is being streamed and/or broadcasted. You may also want to consider a sports package, since some streaming services offer sports-specific packages that consolidate multiple channels into one subscription.

How Much Time Do People Spend Streaming?

According to a 2024 survey of 1,000 Americans conducted by market research company OnePoll, Americans spend an average of three hours and nine minutes a day streaming digital media. This translates to over 21 hours per week, which is equivalent to the commitment of a part-time job. This significant investment of time underscores the importance that streaming services play in entertainment and information consumption.

TVs Start to Show Their Age Around the 5-Year Mark

Is it time to replace your TV? On average, a TV lasts between 5 and 10 years, but some signs may indicate that it's time to replace it sooner:

  • Age: TVs may start to show their age around 5 years old, and typically fail after 8–11 years or about 50,000 hours of use.
  • Picture quality: The screen may be fading, have colored lines, or poor sound quality.
  • Functionality: The TV may not respond to the remote, take a long time to start, or lack smart functionality.
  • Other issues: The TV may have screen burn-in or glare. If you decide a new TV makes sense for you, the good news is that TV prices have been consistently decreasing, even as they've become larger and more technologically advanced.

Closed Captions Are Popular With Viewers

Closed captions aren't just for the hearing impaired. An increasing number of people choose to turn on closed captions, also known as subtitles, when watching TV shows and movies. Why is this the case? Some say closed captions help them understand murmuring dialogue or thick accents. Others say that reading the dialogue helps them stay focused on the screen and the plot, especially if there are distractions in the room or the audio quality is poor. Do you use closed captions?

Scammers Are Posing as Internet and TV Providers

If you receive a phone call that promises a "too good to be true" deal to lower your monthly internet or TV bill in exchange for a pre-payment or fee, you should be suspicious. The FTC has received thousands of reports — including many from older adults — about scammers pretending to be their communications provider and trying to trick people out of their money or personal information.

You should never give out your personal, account, or payment information to someone who contacts you out of the blue and demands it. Also, don't trust Caller ID, since scammers can fake a company's name or phone number. If the caller says you have to "prepay" part of your bill with a gift card to get the great deal, it's definitely a scam.

Check Out the Latest in TV Set Technology

Industry insiders share what's new when it comes to features and design:

  • Most TV sets are 4K, and 8K is on the horizon. This provides incredible picture detail.
  • Manufacturers are expanding health and wellness options to better accommodate telehealth appointments.
  • More accessibility options are available, such as the Relumino Mode in Samsung TVs that enhances contrast, color, and sharpness for those with low vision.
  • Screen sizes continue to grow, with models now up to 120 inches or more.
  • Some brands offer the QD-OLED combination for leap-off-the-screen brightness with ultra-rich colors and incredible contrast.

Given these improvements, are you tempted to go shopping for a new TV?

Eating While Watching TV Can Have Negative Effects

We tend to consume more calories when distracted by the TV, since we may not pay attention to our body's signals of fullness and continue eating even after we're full. Eating while watching TV may also make us more apt to choose less healthy foods such as chips, candy, and soda — especially if that's what we see advertised on the screen.

You could try an alternative activity while watching TV. Options include knitting, walking on a treadmill, folding laundry, or housecleaning.

Don't Know What to Do With Old Remotes?

First of all, here's what NOT to do: Don't throw old remotes in the trash, since they contain toxic materials and plastics which shouldn't end up in the landfill. Instead, consider these eco-friendly options:

  1. Recycle at an authorized recycling location.
  2. Donate to a vocational or trade school for use by students in electronics programs.
  3. Bring to a charity/thrift store to be sold.
  4. Remove the batteries and use the space to hide cash or other valuables.

Always Call 811 Before You Dig

If you plan to begin any project that involves digging — such as building a patio, putting up a fence, or planting bushes and trees — remember to call 811 before work begins.

Every digging job requires a call to 811 to have underground utility lines marked. In some cases, lines are buried close to the surface and could easily be damaged by even shallow digging, resulting in service interruptions to your neighborhood.

When you call, simply tell the operator where you're planning to dig and what type of work you'll be doing. The affected local utilities will send a locator to your property, free of charge. Then you'll know what's below and be able to dig safely.

As one of your local service providers, (COMPANY NAME) thanks you in advance for your cooperation!
