Support Small Businesses During This Crisis

COVID-19 precautions to lessen the spread of the illness have dramatically changed our shopping and dining habits, presenting major challenges to our community's small retail stores, restaurants, and related businesses.

While you may not be able to visit these establishments as you normally would due to temporary closures or social distancing measures, you can continue to support small businesses in our community.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Buy gift cards for future use. This is a great way to support a small business now, and many of these businesses are offering the option to purchase gift cards online.
  • Shop online from local businesses. If your favorite local gift shop or bookstore offers online shopping, think about buying birthday and holiday gifts early. (Even if they haven't offered online shopping before, check again. They may be offering it now.)
  • Choose local grocery stores and pharmacies over big-box chains when possible. If you can safely shop in person, please make your trips for essentials to small businesses and help them stay afloat.
  • Order takeout or delivery. This helps local restaurants continue to operate while you maintain social distancing. If you're able, tip the delivery person generously to help these struggling workers.
  • Don't forget about nonprofits. You can double your community assistance by buying a gift card from a local shop and donating it to a nonprofit. For example, you could buy a gift card from a local pet supply store and donate it to an animal shelter.

Small businesses need our support now more than ever to survive this crisis. Please do what you can to help.

Tips For Those New To Working From Home

More and more people are now working from home to help slow the spread of COVID-19. If this work arrangement is new to you, you'll find these tips helpful in terms of productivity and focus:

  • Stick to your workday routine as much as possible. Work roughly the same hours you did before and continue to get dressed in real clothes. Resist the temptation to work in your pajamas!
  • Set up a designated workspace. Work from a desk or table in an area away from other family members so you have the quiet you need to stay on task. Also sit in a supportive chair to help prevent back pain.
  • Stay connected to coworkers. Use applications such as Zoom or FaceTime to help maintain morale during this period of isolation.

If you need to make changes to your home's internet service to accommodate working from home, call us at ###-###-####. We are offering special discounts.

Backpack Safety Is A Weighty Issue

September 16 is National School Backpack Awareness Day. If you have children in your family, this serves as a reminder to check the weight of their backpacks, since the use of overweight ones can be a contributing factor to strains, sprains, dislocations, and fractures.

Take note of the following:

  • Make sure your child's backpack weighs no more than 10-15 percent of his/her body weight.
  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Bigger is not necessarily better. The more room there is in a backpack, the more your child will carry and the heavier the backpack will end up being.
  • Look for a backpack with wide, padded, and adjustable shoulder straps. Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps to distribute the load evenly.

If the weight of needed textbooks becomes problematic for your child, ask the school if it's possible for extra textbooks to be kept at home.

Beware of Scammers Exploiting COVID-19 Fears

Scammers use every opportunity to try and trick you out of money or personal information, and the pandemic is a case in point.

The U.S. Attorney General issued a warning about these coronavirus scams:

  • Individuals and businesses are advertising and selling fake cures and vaccines for COVID-19 online and engaging in other forms of fraud.
  • Phishing emails are being sent from entities posing as the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Malicious websites and apps appear to share coronavirus-related information in order to gain access to your devices and lock them until payment is received.
  • Scammers are seeking donations fraudulently for illegitimate or non-existent charitable organizations.

Now's The Time To Get Serious About Buying Local

While online retailers may offer products at lower prices than some of their brick-and-mortar competitors, there's a lot to be said for supporting local businesses in your community — especially during the pandemic. Here are three reasons to shop local as much as you can:

  • It boosts local economies. When you buy from local small-scale businesses, you're not only helping to create jobs in the community, you're also helping ensure that the profits (and subsequent investments) are likely to stay local.
  • It's environmentally friendly. Products that are manufactured and sold locally require less packaging and shipping, which means less carbon-intensive services like transportation, warehousing, and refrigeration.
  • It strengthens communities. Shopping in your own backyard strengthens the relationship between you and the people who make the products you use. By spending your money at locally owned businesses, you're helping to build a thriving and prosperous community.

Make A Call Before You Dig A Hole

If you plan to begin any project that involves digging — such as building a patio, putting up a fence, or planting bushes and trees — remember to call 811 before work begins.

Every digging job requires a call to 811 to have underground utility lines marked. In some cases, lines are buried close to the surface and could easily be damaged by even shallow digging, resulting in service interruptions to your neighborhood.

When you call, simply tell the operator where you're planning to dig and what type of work you'll be doing. The affected local utilities will send a locator to your property, free of charge. Then you'll know what's below and be able to dig safely.

As one of your local service providers, (COMPANY NAME) thanks you in advance for your cooperation!
