Stay Alert – Watch Out For Vacation Rental Scams

Watch Out For Vacation Rental Scams The last thing you want is for your family's vacation to be ruined by a scam. So be aware that some criminals are using vacation rentals as an opportunity to do just that. These individuals create fake listings, hoping you'll take the bait and pay for a room that doesn't exist. When looking for accommodations, look for these telltale signs:
  • An address that doesn't exist (always double-check it on Google Maps)

  • A deal that's "too good to be true," such as a super-low price, better than average amenities, or a beyond-perfect location

  • An unsecured payment method such as wire transfer, cash, or check

  • Property owners who know little about the area, use poor grammar in written correspondence, or ask you to communicate off of the rental site's system

  • Anything else that seems "off" about the situation
To avoid getting scammed, do your homework including a thorough Google search. Contact the local tourism office to confirm the existence of a business. Pay with a credit card so you can dispute the charge if there's a problem. And look for vacation rental websites that offer money-back guarantees.
